History & Location

Morton Grove was incorporated in December 1895 and is located 10 miles northwest of Chicago. The railroad built tracks in the 1870's and the city began to grow. There are miles and miles of Cook County Forest Preserve trails and the town supports a strong commercial and industrial base. There are two outdoor pools, a museum, four field houses, and 14 parks totaling over 70 acres. Easy access to Chicago is provided by I-94 by car or the Orange line Metra stop.

The Morton Grove Historical Museum was built in 1888 by Nicholas Haupt as a home for his wife and eight children.  Mrs. Haupt died before the home was completed leaving her husband and eight children to occupy the home. Mr. Haupt died two years later. The eight children remained in the house until the youngest child became of age. The third daughter, Elizabeth, married Mathias Yehl in 1901 and they raised their six children in the home. Their daughter, Dorothy Yehl, remained in the house until 1984. To avoid demolition the Morton Grove Historical Society and the Morton Grove Park District raised the home from its original location on Lincoln Avenue and moved it to Harrer Park where it serves as a museum preserving Morton Grove's history.
